Running Vista Media Center on my XBOX 360 (with Video)

Last night I played with the extender function of Windows Vista. This is the first time I have got my XBOX 360 working as an extender with Vista.
Using the latest build of Vista (5472) I setup up the XBOX 360 as an extender. The setup was very simple, it seems slicker that the XP version and maybe a little quicker.
Once up and running it looks exactly like Media Center running on Vista, with the new UI and sounds.

I made a little video of Vista Media Center running on my XBOX 360, check out the new mini guide in action as well as the the new sounds

Great demo! I hadn’t updated my Vista beta box yet, but now I have to to try this out. Looks like that piece of Vista is looking good.

can this new setup play VOB files?  Currently, Windows Media Center 2005 can play VOB files directly, but if a person tries to stream the VOB files through the Xbox 360 as an extender, the Xbox 360 freezes.

Does the XBOX 360 with the new extender s/w runs with MCE 2005 as well? I want to give it for a test a try, but want to stay with my productive MCE with 2005 some more time (maybe until Vista RC1 or RTM). If not, have you checked if you can load the 2005 extender s/w back on the XBOX 360 after the Vista MCE test?

To be honest I didn’t try playing VOB files as it doesn’t work under XP I forgot to try it. Its somthing I will try when I play with it again.

Peter – you don’t have to update the XBOX 360 at all, it gets all the UI directly from the Media Center PC. All I had to do was to disconnect the 360 from my XP box and connect it to the Vista box.
When I finished testing I reconnected it to my XP machine

I get the "This disc’s region code is incorrect for this console" error – is there any way to vercome this?

  7. Ian says:

Steveyou need a later build, so if your not a beta tester you will have to wait for the next public beta

I just tried to install the vista media center extender for xbox360 from build 5472.
As far as installation went, no problems there, very easy, very clear.

    As for use …

I added a share folder from my local vista setup to media center to test.
However whenever I go to the pictures and movies folder, some weird things happen

    1. folders are at random shown and not shown.
I added three share folders through the setup and they don’t all seem to appear all the time.
    Very annoying though.

    2. whenever I click a folder that contains media content ( or sometimes just hover above it ) my xbox360 freezes.
When I wait long enough the extender reboots itself apparantly.
Basically, at the moment it’s useless to me due to the above.

Any thoughts on what might cause this ? Been looking over the net but this freezing problem doesn’t seem to be too common.

Is it really changed ? In a save way ? A backup is made ?
